Tokyo International Film Festival

This year marks the 23rd edition of the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF). As the only Japanese film festival accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), TIFF has played an integral role in Japan’s film industry and cultural scene since its establishment in 1985. TIFF aspires to be recognized as one of the four major film festivals in the world and in the same league as Cannes, Venice, and Berlin, which now stand at the summit of the world’s more than 2,600 international film celebrations.

Grachtenfestival

The Grachtenfestival (Canal Festival) is an annual music festival based on classical music performances. Each performance is set amongst venues characterised by extraordinary or monumental architecture boasting culturally historical value.

Inspired by the annual theme, renowned soloists and ensembles quite often compose concert programmes especially for the festival. However the festival also features advance performances and foretastes of programmes that will be performed at venues elsewhere in the Netherlands later in the season.

The Canal Festival also puts an emphasis on giving young musicians an ideal opportunity to showcase their talents, with performances in lively busy public locations.

The event also includes a Children’s Canal Festival, featuring productions specially intended for children of all ages, from babies and infants up to teenagers.

Many of the concerts are accessible free of charge or at a low entrance fee.

Liteside Festival

The Liteside Festival is a three-day festival over 20-22 August, 2010 at the Westergasfabriek that intertwines Eastern arts and cultures with that of the western world. As artists, first generation citizens, migrants, refugees and asylum seekers help to build the divide between these two worlds.

SAIL Amsterdam

The 8th edition of SAIL will take place from 19 to 23 August 2010. For five days long, the Amsterdam IJ harbour will serve as the backdrop for a festive programme full of music, culture and nautical riches. Preparations are in full swing and the event promises once again to be an unparalled nautical spectacle which includes:

a variety of modern ships
various impressive naval ships and replicas

Amsterdam International Fashion Week

Go Orange for Queens Day

April 30th marks Holland’s beloved holiday Koninginnedag or Queens Day, celebrating the Queen’s birthday. The tradition began on August 31, 1885 with Queen Wilhemina, but it was the current queen, Queen Beatrix’s mother, Queen Juliana who declared the national holiday to be celebrated on her birthday, April 30.

Every year, the Dutch dress in their finest orange paraphernalia – the royal family colors – to celebrate the queen with song, dance, food, boating down the canals and local vendors. We’ve collected some favorite photos of the event and wonder: do you have your own photos or videos to share?

Gay Pride Amsterdam is one of the best and most fun prides in the world. This year the main Amsterdam Gay Pride weekend will be organised from 5 till 8 August 2010. Amsterdam will have street parties all weekend long, the best club circuit parties and of course the famous Canal Parade on Saturday.

Gay pride is one of the most busy weekends of the year in Amsterdam. Make sure you book your flight and hotel early!
