There is a reason why Europe is always a popular location for the winter Olympics. Europe claims fame for some of the most spectacular skiing and winter sport conditions worldwide. Whether you’re traveling alone, with a special someone, or with a family or group, visiting a snow resort near Munich should be on your list.

Munich is conveniently located on the edge of the Austrian border, close to dozens of ski and snow resorts. It’s often difficult to sift through the many options to chose a resort that is best for you. We’re doing the work for you. Here are three of the best ski resorts near Munich.

Best Overall: Kitzbühel, Tyrol, Austria

This all-encompassing resort is set in an idyllic Bavarian village. Set in the midst of a small, medieval town, Kitzbühel is the perfect winter vacation destination. The town, complete with shopping, night life, dining and wellness services provides the perfect backdrop for a vacation for two or a family outing.

Skiing, snowboarding, snow mountaineering, or snow hiking, this resort has got it all. A wide array of indoor and night activities range from ice skating, curling, climbing, swimming, ice hockey and tobogganing.

Best for Families: Ellmau, Austria

This resort has a longstanding reputation for being family-friendly. All around the resort, guests enjoy looming views of the beautiful Wilder Kaiser mountains. Staff at the Ellmau don’t leave the weather up to chance, and have more than 1,000 snow machines ready to intervene to make the slopes powder perfect all year round. Ellmau also offers an extensive family slope area that is perfect for all ages. Snow huts, sun terraces and ski bars pepper the slopes to offer refreshments around every corner.

Best Value: Söll, Austria

Located in the wide valley of the SkiWelt region, this resort offers the best bang for your buck. Transfers and shuttles make this resort one of easiest to get to from the Munich Airport. A quaint central village street runs through the center of the resort. Visitors can enjoy hot mulled wine called glühwein and warm up from the day on the slopes at the Christmas markets in the village.

Last January, the I Love to Fly Nonstop Haiku contest gave would-be poets the opportunity to profess their love for nonstop international flights for the chance to win a trip for two to Amsterdam or Tokyo. Raquel Benito and Mike Donovan were selected as the Haiku winners, and kept I Fly Nonstop apprised of their vacation itineraries before and after their trips.

Raquel has was the first to travel, and took her boyfriend, Nick to explore Japan for nearly two weeks. Here is a video recap of their trip, plus a descriptive follow up.

In July, Mike Donovan wed his sweetheart, Keri, and used their haiku trip to celebrate their marriage and learn more about Keri’s heritage. The couple took bike and canal rides to explore the city’s numerous museums, food culture and special events, such as Sail Amsterdam. The nonstop flight to Schiphol made for an easy trasnfer to Paris, where they finished out their European vacation. Hear about their honeymoon of a lifetime with this video and post-trip blog post.

Wieden+Kennedy was honored to become the strategic and creative partner to Delta Air Lines in 2009. Delta is arguably the most iconic of all American airline brands, and, at that time, with the pending Northwest merger standing to make it the world’s largest airline, Delta also had quite a bit of global attention. Let’s also not forget that our allegiance, as business travelers working for a company with offices in seven countries but headquartered in Portland, was now to Delta. How could we not support the company that provides us nonstop access to our Tokyo and Amsterdam offices?

Practicality aside, Delta also presented a wonderful strategic and creative challenge. There is no better time for an advertising agency to work with a brand than when it is reinventing itself, and there is no more fertile opportunity for W+K specifically than when that brand is looking to uncover and communicate its core values and true voice. Delta was in such a place, and we were able to work with the team in Atlanta to find Delta’s truly differentiated offering and to create a campaign to communicate this promise.

The airline industry is not for the faint of heart. It is a difficult business. It always has been. From the industry’s birth on the bluffs of Kitty Hawk through today, challenges have been its fuel, and how an airline deals with those challenges is the true measure of its worth. This is the thought behind Delta’s new tagline, “Keep Climbing,” and the campaign that supports it. With “Keep Climbing,” Delta and its employees are committing themselves to making flying better in meaningful ways.

For the September 2010 launch of the new Delta campaign – which appeared primarily in NYC, but also in Portland thanks to the Port – we shot two TV spots and several videos and produced a multitude of print ads, billboards and destination images for the brand to communicate Delta’s mission to “Keep Climbing.” So far, popular response to the campaign has been terrific and Delta is so pleased by the positive impact the campaign is having on the brand that it will redouble its marketing efforts next year with a national push.

Traversing the world is not just part of what many of the 150 Portland-based Mercy Corps employees do. It’s downright essential to our mission. Providing emergency response, visiting the many forgotten corners of the globe where Mercy Corps operates, meeting with partner organizations across the world – these happen frequently and require fast and efficient air transportation. The nonstop flight services that PDX provides allow Mercy Corps employees – myself included – to do our job more efficiently. In the world of charitable organizations, particularly when people’s lives are at stake, efficiency is paramount. Often, hours saved are money saved, lives saved. For Mercy Corps, our donors and our beneficiaries, efficient air travel and non-stop flight connections are priceless.

Okay, so I don’t have all the details for my trip to Japan sorted out, even though I’m leaving on May 27th, but I think that’s part of the adventure. What I do know is that Nick and I will be spending our first five days in Tokyo, then catching a JR train to Kyoto to see the old capital and the surrounding areas for a few days. We plan on finishing our trip somewhere on the coast. We’ll be spending a total of eleven days in the country and I hope to travel by bullet train – known in Japan as the Shinkansen – at least once.We hope to see as many of Tokyo’s unique and exciting districts as possible during our visit. We’ll be staying in Ginza, the financial and shopping district, but thanks to Tokyo’s incredible subway system, I’m sure we won’t have any troubles getting from one neighborhood to the next. During one of our days there, we are going to have to get up early, so that we can get to the Tsukiji Market in time to see the fish auction.

In Kyoto, I can’t wait to see the many traditional Japanese temples that are scattered throughout the area. I’d like to see Sanjusangendo in particular, and its thousand ancient wooden statues of Kannon.

From Kyoto, we’re thinking of taking a side trip about half an hour away to the Himeji Castle. The castle is considered to be Japan’s most beautiful remaining feudal castles, and from the images that I’ve seen, it certainly seems that way.

As for our plans to see the coast, we don’t have any yet. There are so many appealing coastal towns throughout Japan, that it’s hard to find the right one. We’re looking for suggestions or hoping that we make some local friends that point us in the right direction.

Even though our plans aren’t completely sorted out, I do have three big objectives that I must do before I leave Japan: get a kimono In Kyoto, eat sushi and other Japanese delicacies straight from the Tsukiji Market, and buy a useless gadget in Akihabara – the tech Mecca of the world. The adventure is just around the corner…I cannot wait!

Update 8/13/2010: Read all about Raquel’s Japanese adventures in her post trip recap post and video!
