Delta’s CEO talks PDX
I like to look at the way things evolve, how events turn out to be connected in ways you never expected.
Who would have thought, for instance, when I traveled to Portland in 2004 to help launch Northwest Airlines’ first nonstop flight from PDX to Narita International Airport in Tokyo as CEO of Northwest, that some six years later, I would be blogging about Delta Air Lines’ international flights out of Portland? First of all, that I would be doing something called “blogging,” and second, that my path would have led me to the role of CEO of Delta. Read more »

Flying
Boarding an airplane for an international flight instantly takes me away both physically and mentally. For the last 35 years I have flown from the United States back to my native Amsterdam at least once a year. There is no trip which so completely relaxes me, and washes away all the worries and anxieties of everyday life so quickly. It truly is the beauty of flight, of being lifted away from the ordinary, to be whisked to a new place and a new life. Or, in my case, to a reminiscence of my old life! Read more »

A Travel Writer’s Take on Amsterdam
I have one of those jobs that allows me to live anywhere. It also affords me the chance to explore the rest of the world when I’m gone. I’m a freelance travel writer, and I moved to Portland in summer of 2007. I’d been living happily in New Mexico up until that time but felt compelled to try something new, and considered a number of great cities. Read more »

Support Nonstop Service for a Better Economy
The big storms this winter that shut down East Coast airports provided a great reminder of the importance of nonstop flights out of Portland. My young daughter is a great traveler but long delays in strange crowded airports are not fun for anybody in our family. Direct travel is also a great time saver. As someone who tries to eke every single minute out of every single day, I really appreciate the benefits of nonstop travel; as the Chairman of Multnomah County, I appreciate the good jobs and the accompanying vitality that international air service brings to our community. Nonstops Relax Nike Golf Developer
As Nike Golf’s ball research and development director, I fly 100,000-plus miles per year. Over the last 10 years I have maintained an average of six international trips a year, visiting manufacturing partners in Asia and golfers on the various golf courses in the world. One would assume that the opportunity to visit the greatest golf courses would coincide with actually playing an occasional round. However, this is not the case. I’m quite confident that I have the record for visiting the most world’s top 100 greatest golf courses without even playing.

I’ll Have the Nonstop, Hold the Jet Lag
Traveling can take a toll on the body, especially when flying great distances to Tokyo or Amsterdam. Jet Lag is the result of high speed air travel throwing off your internal clock and affects your sleep pattern, focus, and productivity. For each time zone you fly through, it takes your body one full day to adjust. When traveling for business especially, you must be at your best, so here are a few tips to help limit the effects of Jet Lag. Read more »
