Coffee, a book and an elegant canal view. Few afternoons are better spend in Amsterdam.

    Photo Diary: Bookstores

    Delta’s CEO talks PDX

I like to look at the way things evolve, how events turn out to be connected in ways you never expected.

Who would have thought, for instance, when I traveled to Portland in 2004 to help launch Northwest Airlines’ first nonstop flight from PDX to Narita International Airport in Tokyo as CEO of Northwest, that some six years later, I would be blogging about Delta Air Lines’ international flights out of Portland? First of all, that I would be doing something called “blogging,” and second, that my path would have led me to the role of CEO of Delta. Read more »

    Flying

Boarding an airplane for an international flight instantly takes me away both physically and mentally.  For the last 35 years I have flown from the United States back to my native Amsterdam at least once a year.  There is no trip which so completely relaxes me, and washes away all the worries and anxieties of everyday life so quickly.  It truly is the beauty of flight, of being lifted away from the ordinary, to be whisked to a new place and a new life.  Or, in my case, to a reminiscence of my old life! Japan's national flower, the Chrysanthemum

Photo Diary: National and State Flowers

While many European countries do not have an official flower, the Netherlands has lovingly adopted the tulip. Locals celebrate the country’s favorite flower during events such as the Queens Day and Tulip Time Festival.  Tokyo, on the other hand, has two flowers: the famous cherry blossoms (the unofficial flower) and the Chrysanthemum. Portland is often referred to as the “City of Roses”, but the state flower is actually the Oregon Grape. The plant produces small bunches of yellow blossoms and then unveils small grape-shaped fruit. This plant is not safe for eating, however, so enjoy its beauty from afar. Read more »

    Cherry Blossom Viewing Hot Spots

Spring has made its appearance uncharacteristically early this year, but Japan has welcomed the blooming cherry blossoms with open arms. The annual cherry blossom festivals typically kick off in mid- to late-March and continue through the end of April (check for this year’s anticipated schedules here), and if you’re looking for the best places to “ooh” and “aah” over the cherry blossoms trees, here are a few hot spots: Read more »
