    Nike headquarters in Shanghai

Flying the Good Flight: Part 8

    May 26, 2010
I had the chance to visit the flagship Nike store in Shanghai today. Aside from being quite large, I was struck by the unique to China product line, and not one, but two Nike iD studios where customers can select shoes from the Nike product line and then pick custom colors and other amenities to their own taste. The customized shoes are shipped directly to the customer.

Flying the Good Flight: Part 7

    May 25, 2010
The delegates on the Governor’s Asia Trade mission were treated to a water-side tour of the port area of Hong Kong harbor, one of the busiest in the world. That was followed by a visit to the Hutchison International Terminals’ logistic center, an enormous building with 5 million square feet of space devoted to stuffing containers with manufactured goods from Hong Kong and southern China. Many, many household and electronic items that you and I purchase everyday pass through this facility. Read more »

Asia Trade Mission Blog #3 (05/17/10): The attached video shows members of the Governor’s Asia trade delegation test driving the Mitsubishi I-miev, their plug-in electric auto. Mitsubishi intends to introduce this vehicle to the US in 2012. The Governor is hoping that Mitsubishi will choose Portland as the launch site for North American sales of the I-meiv which goes over 100 miles per charge. Each charge costs roughly $2.00 in electricity costs. Read more »

    Electronic walkway

Flying the Good Flight: Part 2

Asia Trade Mission Blog #2 (05/16/10): While traveling, I pay attention to what other airports and marine terminals are doing. Below is a picture of a variable speed moving walkway which stops when no one is riding it…a big energy saver. These are common throughout Asia and Europe but not in the US. In fact, the very first installation in the US is at PDX in the tunnel to the new garage, inspired by walkways like this one at Narita airport in Tokyo. Read more »

    Delta B767 plane

    Delta’s CEO talks PDX

I like to look at the way things evolve, how events turn out to be connected in ways you never expected.

Who would have thought, for instance, when I traveled to Portland in 2004 to help launch Northwest Airlines’ first nonstop flight from PDX to Narita International Airport in Tokyo as CEO of Northwest, that some six years later, I would be blogging about Delta Air Lines’ international flights out of Portland? First of all, that I would be doing something called “blogging,” and second, that my path would have led me to the role of CEO of Delta. Read more »

    Flying

Boarding an airplane for an international flight instantly takes me away both physically and mentally.  For the last 35 years I have flown from the United States back to my native Amsterdam at least once a year.  There is no trip which so completely relaxes me, and washes away all the worries and anxieties of everyday life so quickly.  It truly is the beauty of flight, of being lifted away from the ordinary, to be whisked to a new place and a new life.  Or, in my case, to a reminiscence of my old life! Jeff Miller, President and CEO of Travel Portland

From Art Galleries to Chicken and Rice, International Tourism Boosts Local Industry

What a destination! Over the past 3 years that I have worked with Travel Portland, I never cease to be amazed by this city’s pride and commitment to the high quality tourist experience for domestic and international visitors. The success of the tourism industry is largely dependent on the success of the city’s transportation systems. Portland is fortunate to have multiple access points from train and bus to light rail, and, of course, the airport. Read more »
